Is it me or this is too annoying? One of the greatest things about Twitter in past year was the new design of their Android app. It’s slick, smooth and beautifully designed and yet Twitter’s own website still shows a snapshot of their old Android app.
Let’s get right to the point, I used Facebook home for 48 hours and here is my thoughts on it:
If I want to break this to Pros and Cons; I have to say the design is definitely on the Pro side. It has a beautiful design and to some level it is a good representation of our Facebook time line but here is where the Cons start.
Let’s be honest our Facebook news feed is not as exciting and sophisticated as we think. It is full of dumb statements and creepy pictures and somehow we thought it was a good idea to transfer those to most outer level of our phones in full screen. I got sick of it in first 3 hours, I actually think it reduced my urge to check my Facebook and to think that in the future Ads will be added to that is just ridiculous. If there was a way to filter the feed on my Facebook home for a specific group may be it would be tolerable but at this point it is too much to take. Although I found out that I wouldn’t mind having something like this for my Flipboard, Google Now or some sort of news feed but Facebook has a lot of irrelevant content in it and is not worth having a place on my phone’s home screen.
Also I am a strong believer that good design is invisible and Facebook home could not be more visible. It is too much in my face.
I personally deleted it after 48 hours and don’t think I would install it again but personally would love the idea of Google Now Home project or something like that.
I’ve read several posts over the years from VCs discussing whether stealth mode as a startup is a good thing or a bad thing. Those that oppose stealth mode say you are only hurting yourself by not coming out early (feedback, mentorship, recruiting, investor interest, etc etc).
Just look at YC…
Migration is always hard for the first generation, people who went through this know how many obstacles are in your way. I did that when I was 24 and had to leave my home town, friends and family behind and be away from my wife for about 3 years. You go through hell to learn the new culture (for some people also the language), you have to work twice as hard to prove yourself to get a decent job because not too many people have even heard of your University’s name and don’t trust your skills. I went through all of these and a lot more and when time was getting tough, I always said to myself don’t worry you are doing this for better tomorrow for your family and next generation. I always said to myself it is tough right now but your kid will be born and will grow in a better place where he/she is free and will be safe from oppression and can pursue the American dream.
But days like today scares me, we ran from a country that executes a blogger for expressing his opinion and came to a place that innocent children are massacred by a psycho, just like that. For a parent (which I am not) school should be the safest place after home. The only place that you can leave your children and be sure they are gonna be fine and will be taken care of.
I am not a parent but can’t even think about what’s going through those parents’ mind. There are psychos all over the world but can they all equip themselves with mass murder weapons that easily?
Just in past one year we’ve had Colorado, Oregon and now Newtown. I don’t know how 2013 is going to be.
Are we ever gonna learn?
